As we celebrate International Women’s Day, Sunbird AI is contributing to a powerful approach to Artificial Intelligence (AI) development in Africa: gender-responsive research. This means ensuring AI is built with a deep understanding of the cultural, social, and economic realities of both women and men. After all, gender isn’t just about biology; it’s about power dynamics and who gets a seat at the table when it comes to shaping the tools of the future.
We are proud to be part of the Gender and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Network (GRAIN) working together to address the critical gap in AI and gender research for Sub-Saharan Africa. Our focus is multifaceted: advocating for the collection of disaggregated data that reflects the realities of both women and men, supporting research that builds fair and unbiased AI tools, and contributing to the development of ethical AI frameworks specifically designed for the African context.
Africa’s journey with AI requires a strong focus on gender-responsive research due to several critical challenges. The lack of disaggregated data risks perpetuating inequalities through biased algorithms. Imported AI tools might embed foreign biases, potentially harming African women. Limited resources in many African environments could further disadvantage women if AI development isn’t inclusive. Finally, simply copying models from developed nations neglects Africa’s unique needs. By actively participating in gender-responsive research, Africa can ensure AI becomes a tool for progress that empowers all its people.
Building and adopting AI ethics frameworks in Africa requires a multi-step approach that respects gender. This includes conducting gender impact assessments throughout the AI lifecycle, from initial development to deployment. Transparency is key, with countries openly sharing their efforts to promote gender equality in AI. By proactively identifying potential harms and actively working towards inclusivity, Africa can ensure AI becomes a force for good that empowers all its citizens.
